Inspiration: Frayed

Frayed pieces of string have never failed to amaze me in the way that they hang on one’s body. These photos are all different examples of this and all inspiration for DIY. It may be the raw, unfinished look that inspires me, or just the uniqueness of the idea. Whatever it is I really hope it inspires you too.

My previous DIY tutorial, the noodle skirt, could be added to this list of inspiration. Enjoy!

DIY Buckled Friendship Bracelets

Here is a snapshot from of a page from my look book which is filled with all the inspiration for this DIY project. The original idea came from the friendship bracelet buckles I saw in the recent spring 2012 HnM catalogue. I really like the idea because they make friendship bracelets seem more clean and expensive. I still love the messy authentic friendship bracelets with loose threads hanging out at the ends but why have an occasional change?

This bracelet does not necessarily have to be made using a friendship bracelet, I used it because it was a part of my inspiration. You could use fabric, rope etc.

Stuff you need:
A buckle
Needle and thread
Fray stop/Glue
Friendship bracelet/Fabric/Rope etc. ( This material will need to be able to wrap around your wrist 1.5x)
Pin

1. Use the pin to make a hole near the end of your bracelet.

2. Place the pointy part of the bracelet through the hole.

3. Push both parts of the bracelet that are on either end of the buckle through the buckle.

5. Trim the excess fabric or string and sew them both together.

6. Trim the excess string on the other end of the bracelet too and create a few holes on that end using the same technique used in step 1.

And that is it :)

p.s. These look best worn in bulk.

DIY Ruffled Necklace

I thought this would be an incredibly funky DIY:

I found it in my look book. What is my look book? It's where I keep pages and photos that I love from fashion magazines, catalogues, the internet etc. Every DIYer needs a look book. It is a necessity.

Here is the result:

Stuff you need:
Fabric
Chain
Needle and thread

1. Cut a strip of fabric that is 5 x 90 cm long.

2. Begin folding the fabric making sure each fold is about 2 cm wide. No need to be perfect here.

3. Once you have folded all of it thread your needle and put it through the fabric. Knot at either end.

It should end up looking like this:

4. On either end of the ruffle make a wide hole using a pin.

5. Open either end of the chain, hook them onto both holes, then close them... Ta-daa!

My mum has started a vegetable patch in the backyard and I thought I would share these lovely photos of flowers that came up instead of pumpkins. Aren't they charming? I love the orangey yellow color. Bye for now!
